Winter is fast approaching, and in many parts of the country that means that soon the temperatures will drop and everything will be covered in snow and ice. While beautiful, this winter weather can cause slip and fall hazards in your parking lots, walkways, and entrances for your employees and patrons. West Bend sees a huge spike in slip and fall injury claims during the winter months. These injuries can be very costly to an organization’s bottom line, as they can involve head or back injuries that can take a long time to heal.Â
Luckily, there are some things your organization can do help decrease winter injuries:
- Prepare: Assess your organization’s efforts to prevent slip and fall injuries during winter.
- Communicate:Â Order safety posters and window clings to remind your employees and customers to stay safe this winter.
- Remove:Â See what type(s) of ice melting agents will work on your surfaces and sample language for a snow removal contract.
- Protect:Â Learn how to protect your employees and customers from slips and falls and other ways to keep them safe.
Taking the time to prepare prior to winter is critical. Lining up a snow removal contractor, ensuring employees are trained on documenting snow/ice removal efforts, and doing a thorough facility check to make sure there are no downspouts or overhangs causing unnecessary slip and fall hazards are all important ways to prepare.Â
